MONTREAL, January 11, 2021 –Propulsion Québec, the cluster for electric and intelligent transportation, is launching a brand-new flagship project En route!, destination: careers in electric and intelligent transportation. Through the rollout of this project, Propulsion Québec aims to raise the profile of the electric and intelligent land transportation sector (EIT) and attract new talent to facilitate access to a qualified EIT workforce. To address the workforce challenges encountered by nearly 70% of the cluster's members, Propulsion Québec also conducted in July 2020 a study on workforce and training needs in the EIT sector in Quebecand issued several recommendations to promote workforce availability; these recommendations are the origin of the unique En route! project in Quebec.
Co-presented by the government of Quebec, this project to highlight training, careers and jobs in electric and intelligent transportation is structured into three levels:
- Promotional campaign for careers in the EIT sector;
- Virtual job and training fair taking place on March 29 and 30, 2021 that will enable matching and the sharing of information about careers in EIT;
- Dedicated website listing job and training offers available in EIT, key sector figures, presentation videos of Quebec companies, job fact sheets, worker profiles, etc.
A qualified workforce for a strong industry
En route!, destination: careers in electric and intelligent transportation aims to better promote the EIT sector, the training that leads to concrete careers in the sector and job opportunities to various target audiences in order to increase the attractiveness of our sector and allow cluster companies to access a pool of workers that meets the industry’s needs.
More specifically, the project has the following objectives:
- Increase the visibility and attractiveness of the EIT sector;
- Raise awareness of the training programs that lead to careers in the EIT sector;
- Promote jobs in the EIT sector and the companies that are hiring;
- Gather and regularly update information related to available training in EIT;
- Ensure networking and enable recruitment between companies and qualified candidates;
- Allow educational institutions to promote their program offerings;
- Contribute, in the long term, to filling positions in the following sub-sectors:
- Transportation electrification;
- Intelligent transport;
- New mobility solutions;
- Maintenance of medium and heavy vehicles.
The project targets students and graduating students, recent graduates, Quebec workers from other industries and sectors, foreign workers from other industries and sectors, as well as guidance counsellors.
Quotes
“The electrification of transportation, smart and integrated mobility solutions are the future of global land transport; many countries have in fact oriented their post-COVID-19 economic recovery efforts in this direction, including Canada and Quebec. To successfully carry out this energy and technological transition and thus ensure the success of our sustainable mobility projects, it is imperative to train, develop and attract a qualified workforce. Thanks to its many assets, including its human capital, the presence of an emerging ecosystem and an abundance of renewable energy, Quebec naturally positions itself as a leader in the EIT sector on the international stage. It is here that career opportunities are most promising, and it is with various government partners, educational institutions and Quebec EIT companies that the cluster is counting on attracting a pool of talent from both Quebec and elsewhere! By developing the skills specific to the needs of our sector, but also by encouraging the re-skilling of certain workers, we will be able to ensure a strong workforce for our industry,” said Sarah Houde, President and CEO of Propulsion Québec, the cluster for electric and intelligent transportation.
“The $150,000 support offered by Services Québec for holding the virtual fair is all the more important in the current pandemic situation. This promising initiative will help fill a workforce shortage in a forward-looking field, at a time when Quebec is committing to a major project to electrify its economy through the Plan for a Green Economy 2030. Indeed, economic sectors such as transportation and artificial intelligence applied to mobility are considered important for the recovery of our economy. These sectors must therefore be promoted and people encouraged to pursue training that leads to jobs in these sectors. Moreover, measures, including the Program to Support Recovery by Increasing Training (PARAF), have already been implemented to promote training, re-skilling and the development of workers’ skills,” stated the Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Solidarity and Minister responsible for the Mauricie region, Mr. Jean Boulet.
The realization of this project is made possible thanks to the financial support of our partners: the government of Quebec, Merkur, LeddarTech, BRP, Effenco, AddÉnergie, Bixi, La Compagnie Électrique Lion, the Société de transport de Laval, Cégep de Saint-Jérôme, École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS), Cégep de Sainte-Foy, Université Laval, Compétences VÉ and McGill University.
