Electric vehicle batteries

Discover the ecosystem, ongoing projects and collaboration opportunities in Quebec.

The EV battery sector brings together Quebec actors across the full value chain — from critical minerals to manufacturing, second life and recycling. It aims to position Quebec as a world leader in a strategic zero-emission industry.

Key points

  • An integrated value chain, from mine to recycling
  • Critical and strategic minerals on Quebec's territory
  • Recognized expertise in technological innovation
  • Abundant green energy as a competitive advantage

Quebec is well positioned to remain a leader in batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) and can build on assets present in its territory: critical and strategic minerals (CSMs), expertise and technological innovation as well as green energy.

Since 2019, Propulsion Québec has highlighted the immense potential of the lithium-ion battery sector in Quebec through its KPMG study that revealed all the province's tremendous assets.

To meet the evolving needs of sustainable mobility, this sector covers the entire battery value chain for zero-emission vehicles; from extraction and processing of CSMs, to complete battery manufacturing, to second-life reuse and recycling.

Alongside the establishment of a local supply chain, the province can also benefit from markets in the rest of Canada, the United States and Europe. This stabilizes and secures the supply throughout the value chain. Quebec is therefore working concretely to reduce the carbon footprint at each link in the chain, resulting in greener batteries.

Ideas supported by Propulsion Québec

  1. 1

Quebec's battery sector is a rapidly evolving ecosystem with diverse players.

Propulsion Québec takes on the challenge of acting as spokesperson for the ecosystem in Quebec and internationally, supporting the growth of the many players in this sector and facilitating their coordination.
  2. 2

A key player on the North American stage, Quebec has a head start on the global movement to reduce GHGs.

However, Quebec must keep pace and be proactive to maintain this lead. Propulsion Québec does everything possible to maximize our chances of success in this energy transition by mobilizing members and partners.
  3. 3

This decarbonized industrial revolution also means jobs to fill.

Collaboration between stakeholders is essential to maximize synergies. Propulsion Québec promotes collaboration, networking and exchanges between players. Several educational institutions are already working to meet the needs of this new industry.
  4. 4

Valuing batteries throughout their lifecycle is important for a successful energy transition.

It is important to support the industry that gives batteries a second life and the recycling industry to eventually ensure that CSMs are recovered in Quebec to promote local supply of raw materials.
