Lion is an innovative manufacturer of zero-emission vehicles. We design, engineer and produce 100% electric buses and minibuses for school, special-needs and public transit, as well as electric urban trucks. Lion is a leader in transport electrification in North America. With proven technology in hand, we are applying this expertise to a zero-emission urban truck.
The electric truck is ROI
The new urban truck promises an impressive return on investment. The total cost of ownership and operation of the electric truck is far lower than that of a diesel truck. In fact, if we compare savings over a 12-year period without government incentives, an electric truck can save approximately $197,000 in total.
Government incentive programs
There are incentive programs that further accelerate the return on investment. Under Quebec’s 2013–2020 Climate Change Action Plan, the Ministry was mandated to reduce the environmental footprint of road freight transport. To fulfill this mandate, it created the Écocamionnage assistance program, which provides a subsidy covering 50% of eligible expenses up to a maximum of $75,000 for the purchase of a vehicle like the Lion8. The total savings are even more impressive if we recalculate the return on investment including the $75,000 Écocamionnage grant. That represents a total of $272,100 in savings per vehicle. At the federal level, a program makes vehicles eligible for a full tax deduction in the year they are placed in service.
More savings, fewer emissions
The Lion8 was designed and built to be 100% electric. Each component is optimally arranged, making the vehicle far more efficient. There is an 80% reduction in energy costs and a 60% reduction in maintenance costs. The truck’s electric drivetrain contains very few components (no exhaust system, no particulate filters, no transmission, no oil changes, etc.). Like all electric vehicles, the more the Lion8 is driven, the more cost-effective it becomes. In the case of a truck with an electric dump body, such as the version presented at Impulsion Montréal, the truck is estimated to pay for itself within a four-year period, depending on distance traveled.
The electric truck: good for our planet and our health
In Quebec, transportation accounts for 43% of greenhouse gas emissions and heavy-duty transport is responsible for 12% of total emissions. There are currently an estimated 125,000 heavy trucks on Quebec’s roads. Electrifying 50% of heavy trucks would save nearly 6.25 million tonnes of greenhouse gases annually. Transport electrification is therefore an economical, beneficial and profitable solution for businesses, as well as a good way to combat climate change. Diesel emissions also have significant impacts on our health. In fact, these emissions were responsible for 320 premature deaths in Canada in 2015, in addition to causing human health impacts such as symptoms of asthma and bronchitis. Zero-emission heavy transport offers nothing but benefits at every level!
World’s first truck with a 100% electric powertrain and automated collection body!
Collection trucks are considered a highly relevant application for being 100% electric, given that fuel consumption for these vehicles can reach 35,000 liters of diesel per year. Annual costs can thus approach nearly $40,000. Making collection trucks 100% electric would save thousands of dollars per year in fuel, extend operating hours thanks to reduced noise, and eliminate exhaust emissions; all of which contribute to better working conditions for drivers and a cleaner, quieter urban environment.
We are convinced that the transition to fully electric vehicles will bring major improvements; commercial urban transport has never been more advantageous for our planet, our society, and our quality of life.
