Demand response: Save money by using hydro at the right times

What does managing power demand mean?
The power grid comes under heavy strain at certain times, especially in winter when it is very cold. The most critical periods are mornings from 6 to 9 a.m. and end of day from 4 to 8 p.m., as this is when winter peaks occur and demand is very high.
Hydro-Québec has a number of offers where businesses and organizations can save on their bill if they curb peak-period consumption or shift it to off-peak times. These initiatives can also ease pressure on the grid and help electrify sectors that still rely on fossil fuels.

Demand Response (DR) Option
The DR Option lets you choose your reduction strategy: Curb your power demand, shift your consumption, or use an alternative energy source. A mean reduction of at least 10 kW can put you in line for a substantial credit at the end of winter.
Hilo
Business customers can also opt for Hilo’s smart power management service, which automatically lowers your buildings’ power demand during winter peaks. Participating customers get cash incentives and rewards.
Last year, companies and organizations with the Demand Response (DR) Option cut their hydro use by more than 443 MW—equivalent to the power needed to supply more than 63,000 homes! More than $26,500,000 was credited to their bills as a result. Timing your hydro use has never paid off so well!
