Ambition TEI 2030: an industrial roadmap to make Quebec a leader in TEI by 2030

Montreal, June 23, 2022— Propulsion Québec, the cluster for electric and smart transportation, in collaboration with the firm Deloitte, has produced a roadmap for the electric and smart transportation (EIT) ecosystem entitled Ambition EIT 2030. This innovative project responds to the urgent need to establish a long-term acceleration plan for the development of sustainable electric and smart mobility. It is a true industrial policy that will position Quebec as a world leader in these sectors and will significantly strengthen the fight against climate change.

Through Ambition EIT 2030, more than 200 participants were mobilized in a collaborative reflection process to map our ecosystem, and to identify promising niches as well as high-potential initiatives to develop in Quebec to secure a strategic market position in North America by 2030. This innovative and unique roadmap is based on 8 strategic themes related to major action areas and is translated into 225 concrete initiatives that will be carried out by Propulsion Québec and numerous players in the Quebec EIT ecosystem.

The themes, translated into concrete actions, will enable:

  • Theme 1– Develop a world-class talent pool
  • Theme 2– Stimulate the creation of high-potential innovations
  • Theme 3– Lead the electric vehicle (EV) transition effort in North America
  • Theme 4– Accelerate the deployment of infrastructure
  • Theme 5– Promote collaborative and secure data management
  • Theme 6– Increase simulation, experimentation and testing capabilities to become a global benchmark
  • Theme 7– Accelerate access to capital and financing opportunities
  • Theme 8– Focus on the battery value chain to support the growth of EIT

In order to monitor the progress of this roadmap and the completion of its initiatives, Propulsion Québec has developed an online dashboard accessible on its websiteintended for all individuals interested in the advancement of electric and smart transportation. This dashboard allows stakeholders to update the progress of their projects and thus keep the EIT ecosystem mobilized for the next 8 years, in addition to ensuring a steady course for the entire land transport industry in Quebec.

This project was carried out thanks to the support of the Government of Quebec – the Ministry of Economy and Innovation, the Ministry of the Environment and the Fight Against Climate Change, Mouvement Desjardins, Hydro‑Québec, IVEY Foundation, the Montreal Metropolitan Community, Deloitte and ISEQ.

Quotes

"Quebec already had solid resources and strengths in the sector, and the creation of this roadmap complements the potential of our industry. The ecosystem now benefits from a clear and concrete plan to develop innovative technological solutions to make Quebec a world leader in EIT. It is not surprising: the deployment of the EIT ecosystem represents an important opportunity for Quebec to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as well as to improve the mobility of Quebecers, the competitiveness of local businesses and to stimulate a high-impact economic sector. Ambition EIT aims to position Quebec as a model of innovation by strengthening the economic, social and environmental impact of the sector while supporting the Government of Quebec in achieving these objectives.", saidSarah Houde, President and Chief Executive Officer of Propulsion Québec.

"Propulsion Québec’s roadmap, which aims to mobilize the driving forces and accelerate the development of electric and smart transportation in Quebec, is fully in line with the major electrification of transportation our government has undertaken as part of the Plan for a Green Economy 2030. We are pleased to support this new interactive platform through which actors from the industrial, governmental and academic sectors will have access to a strategic source of information to participate in accelerating this innovative ecosystem."Benoit Charette, Minister of the Environment and the Fight Against Climate Change, Minister responsible for the Fight Against Racism and Minister responsible for the region of Laval.

" The electrification of transportation is not only essential to reduce GHGs, but also offers opportunities for innovation and responsible economic development for Quebec businesses. "statesMathieu Talbot, Vice-President, Business Services and Corporate Financing of Mouvement Desjardins. " This partnership with Propulsion Québec allows us to position ourselves well to provide the best possible support to our members and clients in this transition. In this regard, nearly 300 electric vehicle charging stations have been installed in the parking lots of Desjardins branches and corporate buildings across Quebec and Ontario. "

" Congratulations to Propulsion Québec and its partners for the Ambition EIT 2030 project. Hydro‑Québec will continue to fully play its role in facilitating and paving the way for the electric mobility of tomorrow. "France Lampron, Director of Mobility at Hydro‑Québec.

"Every action counts to reduce GHG emissions from transport, and this acceleration plan for the development of sustainable electric mobility shows that stakeholders are mobilized to contribute. The electric and smart transportation sector is an essential actor in the economic development of the MMC and I am pleased that this roadmap contributes to achieving the objectives set out in the Metropolitan Economic Development Plan 2022-31", notedValérie Plante, Mayor of Montreal and President of the Montreal Metropolitan Community.

"Propulsion Québec’s roadmap charts a new path for decarbonization and economic development in Quebec. It presents a compelling vision of Quebec as a world leader in carbon neutrality and the industries that will shape that future. The scope and ambition of the project, which brings together intelligent transportation, electric vehicles and the battery value chain, are unmatched. This is exactly what Canada needs: an eloquent example of a well-thought-out industrial strategy. Other industries with net-zero goals have much to learn from this idea and the bold action plan presented here."Bentley Allan, Associate Professor of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University and Faculty Fellow at the Transition Accelerator.
