Ottawa, April 26, 2021 —The Information and Communications Technology Council (CTIC) has partnered with Propulsion Québec to better understand the role of electric vehicles (EVs) in an environmentally sustainable economic recovery in Quebec and the implications of the sector’s growth for the province’s labour market.

Quebec is positioned to become a leader in electric and smart land transportation, which is a key element in the fight against climate change. The province benefits from impressive assets and has a unique innovative ecosystem for the development of electric and smart transportation. In 2018, the sector already accounted for $1.3 billion of Quebec’s GDP, 147 active companies, 6,240 jobs and had generated $2.2 billion in sales.

The research conducted under the CTIC–Propulsion Québec partnership aims to better understand the investments that will be required in electric vehicle companies and in traditional supply-chain businesses to accelerate the development of EVs and other dimensions of the sector.

It will be equally important to understand the implications of EVs on the labour market in the short and long term (three to five years), including the types of jobs and specific skills required in the sector.

Other areas of research are as follows:

  • Paths toward an innovative and environmentally friendly transportation system in Quebec, including infrastructure needs, talent/training and policy levers.
  • Mapping the skills and jobs of existing talent in Quebec, the future needs to support growth, including identifying potential talent gaps.
  • The need to support the transportation sector’s transition from combustion engines to electrified transportation.

This research (consisting of primary and secondary research, industry surveys, informed reviews, data analyses, web scraping, etc.) is expected to be published in the third quarter of 2021.

“We are delighted to partner with Propulsion Québec to better understand the momentum and catalysts behind the development and adoption of electric vehicles in Quebec. The coming years will see a significant maturation period in this industry and Quebec is ready to play a key role in advancing this agenda for the increasingly environmentally conscious consumer,” said Namir Anani, President and CEO of the CTIC.

“Propulsion Québec seeks to position Quebec as a leader in electric and smart transportation, and advocates for a green recovery. Through the major undertaking that is the electrification of transportation, Quebec can generate significant economic benefits and contribute to a sustainable recovery. This strategic project will advance two important areas: on the talent and workforce side to better understand the skills gap needed to support the sector’s growth, and on the public policy side to accelerate re-skilling and the development of key competencies. Finally, this project will also assess the need to support the transport equipment manufacturing industry in its shift toward electrification,” said Sarah Houde, Executive Director of Propulsion Québec.

Propulsion Québec is an intelligent and electric transportation cluster that brings the entire sector together around joint projects aimed at positioning Quebec as a leader in the development and implementation of land transportation systems promoting smart and electric transport. Founded in 2017, Propulsion Québec has more than 210 members from various sectors and deploys its resources across six distinct working groups to develop and support innovative projects. The cluster receives financial support from the Government of Quebec, the Government of Canada, the Montreal Metropolitan Community (CMM), ATTRIX, the FTQ Solidarity Fund, Hydro-Québec and Quebecor.
