Make public transportation extraordinary.

The Société de transport de Laval (STL) is at a turning point. It has undertaken a bold shift:the electrification of its bus fleet. Recognized as a transit company focused on innovation and performance, the STL will devote the coming years to carrying out its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to offering the people of Laval public transit that is ever better adapted to the needs of its customers. More than ever, the STL will need to rely on its team of some 1,200 skilled and engaged employees who will work to implement this major transformation.

On the road to electromobility

In 2007, the City of Laval produced a synthesis of GHG emissions within its territory. Main finding: the report indicated that more than 60% of these emissions came from transport-related activities. The update of this study in 2009 revealed that this percentage had increased to 64%. These figures helped accelerate awareness among decision-makers and citizens regarding the need to implement a series of initiatives, including planning urban public transit according to objectives and principles related to sustainable development.

This reflection led the STL to realign its vision, not only in terms of accessibility and the efficiency of public transit, but also to redirect its efforts toward sustainable mobility.

Toward a 100% electric fleet

  • 2012: the STL purchased the first 40-foot, 100% electric bus in Canada
  • 2021: 10 electric buses are operating on the Laval network
  • 2025: the Company will purchase only electric buses
  • By 2028, the STL aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 45%
  • In 2040, the STL's bus fleet will be entirely electric

A structured transformation aligned with the company's vision

The STL also holds the largest infrastructure project dedicated to electric buses in Quebec. Obviously, this shift to a 100% electric fleet involves multiple challenges, notably the constant evolution of technologies, the modernization of our facilities, the context of uncertainty, the scarcity of labor and material resources — all while ensuring the level of service offered to the community is maintained.

The STL navigates these challenges thanks to the high level of trust placed in its staff. What makes this project possible: transparent communication and agile change management underpinned by enhanced engagement.
