Montreal, May 6, 2019 – The Montreal Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Propulsion Québec today unveil their study entitled Position Quebec and its metropolis as leaders in electric and intelligent transportation. This analysis aims to contribute to the essential reflection that will allow Quebec and its metropolis to stand out in this promising economic sector.

" The economic and technological potential of the electric and intelligent transportation niche is tremendous, and the metropolis has a unique opportunity to claim its place. We have all the ingredients to stand out: a critical mass of talent and technology companies, a concentration of global leaders in artificial intelligence and, of course, world-renowned creativity. The Chamber is proud to unveil this study, which is intended as the starting point for essential reflection. We invite all decision-makers and stakeholders in the sector to take note of it. We will all need to adopt the courses of action it identifies to enable local companies to develop the innovations and mobility solutions of tomorrow," said Michel Leblanc, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Montreal Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce.

" The future of mobility relies on connected, autonomous, shared and electric vehicles. This study demonstrates that Quebec has many assets to stand out in these niches. Quebec's recognized expertise in electrification and the pool of innovative companies in land transport are elements we must build on. Our success in this transforming sector, however, depends on an agile regulatory framework adapted both to the current technological context and to our ambitions. The study proposes an analytical tool on the best ways to support the deployment and commercialization of transport innovations. Propulsion Québec is determined to bring together the industry's driving forces to make Quebec the premier place to create, test and implement new mobility technologies," continued Sarah Houde, President and CEO of Propulsion Québec.

" The rapid changes taking place in the field of transport here and elsewhere require a paradigm shift at all levels in order to make room for innovation and ingenuity. We support this study, which challenges all stakeholders and offers real avenues to accelerate innovation and propel Quebec's electric and intelligent mobility industry," added Marc Blanchet, Vice-President, Southwest Quebec, at SNC-Lavalin.

The study Position Quebec and its metropolis as leaders in electric and intelligent transportation consists of four major chapters:

  • An assessment of Quebec's regulatory framework.
  • A mapping of best international practices based on the analysis of the regulatory framework and public policies of ten territories.
  • A synthesis of success factors drawn from the international mapping in order to identify areas of excellence and avenues for improvement to consider for Quebec.
  • Recommendations for Quebec and Greater Montreal organized around three strategic axes:
    • Strategic axis no
    • 1: Increase the supply of electric and intelligent mobility products and services developed in QuebecStrategic axis no
