IVÉO, in partnership with Propulsion Québec, launched in March 2023 the very first tool dedicated to municipalities allowing them to quickly obtain an estimate of the costs and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions of different specialized fleet electrification scenarios. The announcement was made before an audience bringing together the main actors and partners of the transport electrification sector present at the IMPULSION event, International Summit on Electric and Intelligent Transport (EIT) organized by Propulsion Québec.
This decision support tool, free and accessible online, is primarily intended for decision-makers working in the municipal sphere. It allows, in a few clicks, discovering the different specialized vehicles available in electric versions. Each user can then simulate and compare different purchasing scenarios by integrating various personalized data such as the number of kilometers driven, the vehicles' average consumption, the price of gasoline, etc. The calculator then instantly generates a detailed report identifying the most advantageous short-term scenario based on the ratio “$ invested / tonne of GHG avoided.” Indeed, this ratio alone incorporates several parameters such as the level of use, consumption, applicable subsidies, purchase cost and GHG reduction potential. It thus highlights whether or not it is relevant to electrify certain vehicles by prioritizing the right investments.
Conceived and designed by the team of IVÉO, this original project was able to rely on the expertise of the staff of the Institut du Véhicule Innovant to validate the data and the different calculation hypotheses used.
IVÉO is a non-profit organization (NPO) founded in 2018 with the support of the Government of Quebec; IVÉO's mission is to accelerate innovation in the municipal environment. Its network of innovative cities now comprises more than 55 cities and Regional County Municipalities (MRCs) across the province. Its impartial innovation-broker approach has enabled the deployment of more than 110 projects carried out between cities and innovative companies, in sectors as varied as sustainable mobility, energy efficiency or sustainable water management.
Quotes
"By working closely with our partner cities, we were able to identify the complexity of transport electrification in the municipal sphere. The simulator we propose will undeniably allow decision-makers to make informed choices to maximize the environmental impact of each dollar invested"
"This easy-to-use calculator will undoubtedly be a highly appreciated tool for municipalities in the transition of their vehicle fleets, of all types, toward greener mobility. It is in line with the IVI's mission to improve the environmental impact of transportation and to support the companies and organizations pursuing this objective."
"Cities and municipalities are at the heart of the fight against climate change and need simple and effective tools to make the best decisions in this regard. That is why the Fonds Climat du Grand Montréal is very proud to have contributed to the development of this innovative calculator intended for municipal decision-makers so that they can make the best electrification choices for their vehicle fleets and reduce their GHG emissions as much as possible."
"This is an innovative and unprecedented tool that will allow municipalities across Quebec, regardless of the region, to kick-start their thinking about electrifying their vehicle fleets in a matter of minutes."
"Evaluating the savings as well as the associated greenhouse gas gains makes this decision support tool extremely interesting to address current and future climate challenges. Équiterre therefore wishes to highlight the essential work of our partner IVÉO in supporting municipalities in their electrification reflections and scenario-building, while keeping in mind the improvement of our carbon footprint."
