Electronics has quietly crept into the transportation industry over the years.
If it all began with the addition of a few accessories like headlights, windshield wipers and radios, today we could not imagine any form of transportation without electronic modules. Whether it’s the addition of rear-view cameras, multimedia centers, lidar to steer autonomous cars, or public transit powered by artificial intelligence, electronics is never far away! Recent studies have revealed that 51% of a car’s value is associated with the electronic modules that compose it. While electronics in transportation has made our travel safer and more efficient, over the past year a new threat has cast a shadow over the picture: the semiconductor shortage!
Semiconductors are components at the heart of electronics without which most of the devices we use daily could not function. For various reasons, the manufacture of these precious components was severely affected over the past year, endangering several industries, including transportation. Since many Quebec companies produce and design semiconductor-based modules, collateral impacts can be expected for several more years.
We believe we must start now to think about tomorrow’s solutions to reduce the effects of this crisis. The coming years will therefore be a challenge, and we wanted to be present at the event to support the transportation industry, meet with industry players and decision-makers, and together find solutions.
What is the ISEQ
ISEQ is the Centre of Excellence for Quebec’s electronic systems industry. Created in 2018, ISEQ is a provincial non-profit organization whose mission is to mobilize, structure and bring together all stakeholders of the electronic systems industry and to contribute to Quebec’s economic development.
ISEQ is the crossroads where all public and private stakeholders meet to collaborate on the deployment of the industry on a cross-cutting and intersectoral basis. The non-profit maintains an active presence on the ground across all of Quebec’s administrative regions. It establishes connections both among organizations from every link of the innovation chain — from design to logistical and professional support, including manufacturing and distribution — and with the actors who orbit and support this ecosystem, such as economic development organizations, various levels of government, sector associations and many others.
