Colibri: revolutionizing urban delivery

Following the success of the Colibri Maisonneuve pilot project, a second urban logistics mini-hub has opened in the eastern Plateau Mont Royal. With its 10,000 sq. ft. of space, Colibri Iberville continues to pave the way for a greener delivery system in Montreal.

Colibri offers economical and ecological delivery: parcels are transported by a limited number of trucks whose loading is optimized to a neighborhood mini-distribution center: the mini-hub. Bicycle carts or small electric vehicles better suited to the urban environment then take over to complete the delivery.

Implemented by Coop Carbone with the collaboration of several delivery partners, including FedEx, Courant Plus and Machool, the second mini-hub located in the eastern Plateau Mont-Royal has, since its inauguration on November 8, 2022, made it possible to facilitate greenhouse-gas-free last-mile parcel delivery in a wider area, at lower operating costs. TheTransportation Electrification Strategy 2021-2023 expects that, starting this year, the mini-hubs will contribute to the delivery of 500,000 parcels annually. For reference, Colibri Maisonneuve has contributed to the decarbonized delivery of 260,000 parcels in 2021.

For delivery companies, the Colibri delivery model enables greater operational efficiency in urban environments. In the Colibri Maisonneuve project, delivery drivers make 15% more deliveries per hour than with traditional delivery methods. Why is this? Because vehicles are more agile in traffic and park more easily, and cargo is more readily accessible. Fewer trucks on Montreal streets also means less pollution, traffic congestion and accidents, as well as streets in better condition for longer. In fact, it is estimated that 5,000 parcels delivered by cargo bike each week avoid 50 tonnes of CO2 every year.

Statistics such as these show that the Colibri delivery model is a concrete way of achieving the sustainable mobility targets that the City of Montreal has set itself, in particular through theClimate plan and theCity project of the future 2050 Urban and Mobility Plan. This is also in line with the City of Montreal's desire to increase the circularity of the mobility and logistics value chain, as presented in themontreal circular economy roadmap project which is currently the subject of a public consultation. So keep an eye out for a mini-hub near you!
