Secretary General, SLOCAT Partnership

Passionate about social, economic and environmental justice; over the past 20 years Maruxa has worked with leaders in government, parliament, multilateral institutions, activism, philanthropy and business across continents to advance equitable prosperity and climate change solutions. Her focus is public policy development, capacity building and multi-stakeholder partnerships and she specialises in urban and territorial development.

Maruxa currently serves as Secretary General of the SLOCAT Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport. Previously she founded Communitas, the multi-stakeholder coalition which pioneered knowledge-based advocacy for the Sustainable Development Goal on Cities and Human Settlements. Maruxa also served as Secretary General of Regions for Sustainable Development, and during her tenure co-facilitated the engagement of sub-national governments in the UN Rio +20 Conference. She has also held posts as Senior Policy Specialist in Cities Alliance-UNOPS; as well as in local and regional government in the UK and Spain. In 2004-2010, she was Deputy Director of the Representation of the South West of England to the EU, where she led on the sustainability portfolio for a partnership of regional authorities, academia and the private sector. Maruxa started her career at the Representation of the Spanish region of Galicia to the EU and at the EU Committee of the Regions.

Prolific public speaker and analyst, Maruxa has recently been appointed as Champion of the Pathfinder Initiative, which focuses on pathways for healthy zero-carbon futures and is overseen by The Lancet Pathfinder Commission. In 2019 she was selected to Chair the 68th United Nations Civil Society Conference. In recent years Maruxa has served as expert in the Future Earth community; the Urban Expert Panel convened by UCL and Nature Sustainability, the interdisciplinary journal of Nature Research; and in the Conference of European Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe (CPMR).
