Kingston's Vision for Electrification

In 2014 the City of Kington in Ontario, Canada with a population of about 130,000 adopted ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and identified the electrification of vehicles and building systems as critical components to success in meeting those goals and Kingston's vision of becoming Canada's most sustainable city. In 2017 Kington adopted its first Electric Vehicle Strategy that saw funding approved for the installation of 44 Level 2 and two Level 3 public EV charging stations curbside and at municipal parking and recreation facilities. The strategy also set out plans for the electrification of the City's light duty and public transit fleets. By 2026 Kingston plans to have over 30 light duty electric vehicles and 15 full size electric transit buses operating. We continue to examine opportunities for electrification of other components of our fleet such as waste collection and public works vehicles and specialty equipment like street sweepers and ice resurfacers.
