General description

Light electric vehicle mechanics understand the typical operation of a wide variety of electric-power-assisted systems on the market. They inspect, maintain, diagnose for defects, repair, and test a variety of motorized vehicles such as electric bikes, motorcycles, scooters, snowmobiles, outboard motors, forklifts, and all-terrain vehicles. This is a developing profession because the supply of vehicles in this category is still relatively limited. Light electric vehicle mechanics are key members of a team and tackle exciting and varied challenges to help drive vehicle automation forward.

Examples of tasks and responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance on electrical systems (e.g., cleaning, lubricating components, adjusting brakes and gears, maintaining bearings, aligning wheels, etc.)
  • Evaluate the condition and operation of a vehicle’s electric assist system and make a diagnosis
  • Refer to drawings to make repairs to electrical systems
  • Carry out the necessary repairs following a logic based on interdependence between components
  • Carry out the usual checks and tests
  • Give advice on use and/or maintenance
