Engineer, Electric vehicles and charging

General description

Electrical engineers design, plan, study, evaluate, and test electrical equipment and systems. They help develop electric vehicles and charging stations by designing various components (e.g., traction control and speed regulator for electric vehicles and cables and energy meters for charging stations). They also serve as a technical resource to present diagnostics and advise clients. They are in high demand due to the burgeoning electric and smart transportation industry. They have the opportunity to work on the latest technology within a multidisciplinary team that includes enthusiastic and qualified engineers and technicians. They also help create a range of electrification strategies and develop innovative charging stations to support electric mobility!

Examples of tasks and responsibilities

  • Design electrical systems, circuits, components, networks, and high-voltage electrical installations and integrate them in electric and smart vehicles
  • Lead research on the feasibility, design, operation, and performance of electrical systems
  • Prepare cost and time estimates and design specifications for electrical systems and installations
  • Supervise and check the installation, modification, testing, and operation of electrical systems and devices
  • Investigate the cause of electrical equipment failures and offer solutions to correct and improve systems or products
  • Enforce safety standards and develop maintenance and operating standards for electrical systems and devices
  • Create and update high-, medium-, and low-voltage electrical diagrams for electric vehicles

Required skills

  • Knowledge of electrical power systems
  • Knowledge and interest in the field of transportation (e.g., automobiles, recreational vehicles, etc.)
  • Programming knowledge (e.g., Python, VBA, C, C++, C#, etc.)
  • Knowledge of high-voltage drive systems, high- and low-voltage auxiliary systems, and vehicle controls
  • Knowledge in the design of low- and/or high-voltage electrical systems, battery systems and power distributors
  • Knowledge of LabVIEW, Matlab, and Simulink software
  • Ability to be proactive and find innovative solutions in a constantly changing environment
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills
  • Good teamwork skills
  • Ability to discuss technical concepts fluently in written and spoken English
  • Membership in (or eligibility for) Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ)
